Overview
Restorative justice processes are increasingly being recognised as practical tools for repairing relationships damaged through crime, conflict and harm. In the last decade, there has been an overall increase in the use of restorative practices in the UK, as well as a growth in the areas it is used, which now include criminal justice, education, social care and community settings, with associated roles in the workplace developing alongside.
Practical training in restorative facilitation is key to ensuring the restorative processes that are delivered in any setting are safe and positive experiences for all involved. The Restorative Justice Council (RJC - the independent membership body for restorative practice in the UK) champions standards for restorative practice and manages quality marks and registration for training providers, courses and practitioners to provide assurances to the managers, service users and the public that a facilitator or service is providing safe and professional restorative processes.
Restorative justice has often been described as a 'practice-led theory' in that practices were implemented first, with the theoretical basis coming later and still developing. Due to this, many practical RJ facilitator courses include minimal theoretical discussions and analysis, while many restorative justice courses delivered within a university setting often lack the necessary practical skills to make the course applicable to students within the workplace. These courses aim to overcome these issues by ensuring a comprehensive synthesis of theory and practice to equip students with theoretical insight and practical skills.
The Restorative Justice - Theory and Practice course will be inclusive of a facilitator training programme, which is approved by the RJC at the Foundation level (and provides the accompanying certificate), to ensure the development of effective restorative facilitators. This will provide students with an advantage in the employability sector, as they will be trained as RJ facilitators at the end of the respective courses. In addition, specific skills workshops (constituting the facilitator training programme) will be delivered by a registered trainer and experienced registered facilitator, thus bridging the gap between theory and practice and giving students further insight into how RJ works in the workplace. The Restorative Justice - Complex and Sensitive Cases course will be inclusive of a practical element designed to develop practitioner/facilitator skills in complex and sensitive cases (and will be inclusive of an approved CPD course)
